In this book, author and educator Gail A. Cassidy helps students discover their passion and earn money doing what they love.
KIDS MENTORING KIDS
Kids helping kids provides growth for both the mentor and the student being mentored. The goal is to provide teens with the tools necessary to participate to their fullest in and outside the school community.
Mentors learn and then teach leadership skills to their mentorees. Skills include communication skills, body language, human relation skills and much more. Their support of their mentorees opens the door for success in school and for personal self-development for these teens.
The major benefits of Kids Mentoring Kids is reduced incidents of bullying, improved individual self-concepts, improved grades, and improved attitudes.
The program was initially designed for students who needed help, whether academically or socially; however, the mentors also benefitted from the mentoring experience.
Statements such as “I felt important.” “It was the first time I felt looked up to.” “I like the fact that I can be trusted and that I can help someone else.” “I know that I need someone to talk to sometimes—being there for someone else is great.” “I’ve learned that I can be a bigger person, a person to go to in a time of trouble,” and “I loved helping the underclassmen” were typical of the responses from the mentors on follow-up of the programs.
The responses from parents of those being mentored were also positive. A typical response is from one mother who said her son actually looks forward to going to school. Before that, he was scared to leave his home. Teachers commented on improved grades of those being mentored.
The primary goals for both mentor and mentoree include enhanced self-esteem, acceptance, validation, and self-actualization. Teens learn how they can be the best that they can be and teach their mentorees the same.
Speaking Skills for Teens Instructor Manual
The curriculum for Speaking Skills for Teens addresses the often times overlooked issue of responsibility, which is addressed through the study of attitude, thoughts, nonverbal communication, and an understanding of people skills.
This Instructor’s Manual is formatted in a manner to make it easy for the instructor to locate not only what is happening each session but also what the necessary background material is.
Each session begins with TIPS FOR THE WEEK (effective human relation recommendations), and each session ends with testimonials from former students. You will be told what equipment you need and what each week’s objectives are. You are taken step-by-step through each session. The first few sessions are packed with background information which is easy to assimilate and remember. Interspersed among the material are appropriate, meaningful quotations from well-known people.
Speaking Skills for Teens Participant Manual
Through positive responses to each classmate’s talk, students impact their fellow participants in ways that last for years.
Speaking Skills for Teens trains students to be effective speakers. These skills also motivate students to view themselves and their classmates in a respectful manner. Because they can find only positives in each talk given by their peers, that is the way they start viewing each presenter even before the talk begins.
Through active participation, students learn how to maximize their speaking skills, their poise, and their recognition of their own skills and abilities. In addition to learning actual skills—openings, evidence, closings, body language, and attitude training, participants learn how to use their voice to produce the greatest effect. They have the opportunity to practice being as they would like to be.
Participants will learn far more than speaking skills. They learn to how take responsibility for how they feel, act, react. The training allows them to see people in a more positive manner. They learn how to “read” people and become aware of how they themselves are “read.”
Students evaluate every speaker in writing immediately after their talk. Only positive comments are allowed—for substance, delivery, or impact. The teacher writes an area for improvement on a card and adds a positive statement immediately after each talk that only the speaker sees. At the end of the course, each student receives the evaluations from every classmate.
While participants may eventually forget facts and figures learned elsewhere, they will retain much of what they master in this course, because they will have constant opportunities to be on their feet and institute that which they have learned. They will also have many opportunities to laugh, cry, and genuinely feel good—perhaps the greatest way to solidify their learning!
Kindness Talks: Ready-made Speeches Adaptable to All Audiences
Kindness Talks are speeches about human relation skills, including verbal and non-verbal communication skills, attitude, listening and so much more.
Talks can be presented in a one-hour presentation format, a three-day communications workshop or any length in-between. Talks can be adapted for any group that wants to improve their communication and relationship skills. Groups such as Rotarians, stockholders, engineers, students, business owners, even police, teachers, parents, or any business in existence benefit from being a part of these programs.
If you are a small business owner or a coach or a teacher, you will find the information in this book to be applicable to any audience. Why? Everything in our individual worlds revolves around attitude – how happy or unhappy we are, how successful we are, how effective our relationships are, even how we are feeling. Everything relating to how we feel and what we do in life relates to our attitude. The information presented in Kindness Talks helps people to learn how to control their attitudes once they learn how.
Mastering the basics in people skills enables people to improve the quality of communication in any organization. Learning these skills provides a definite advantage for employees in businesses or in any walk of life.
A person’s success in business is based on not only his/her knowledge of their business but also on their ability to effectively communicate with others. As Maya Angelous said, “People may not remember what you did or what you said, but they will remember how you made them feel.”
Who can doubt the value of good interpersonal relationships? Who can put a price on the value of good customer service? Who would deny the importance of making people feel important? And who would deny the importance of effective communication, both verbal and nonverbal? Plus, what role does attitude play in relationships? These questions are answered in Kindness Talks presentations.
The essential learning element of “fun” permeates the presentations, no matter what the length of the program. Having fun, gaining credibility, attracting customers and clients, increasing revenue are a few of the benefits experienced by the person who is recognized as the “Communications Expert.”
The basic elements of the one-hour talk are the same as they are for a two-hour presentation or a three-day workshop. Longer programs involve more audience participation and/or small group setups. The end result is the opportunity for participants to be recognized as ”Communication Experts.”
